Laisse Les Bons Moments Rouler

The annual small business conference for the National 8(a) Association went back to New Orleans this year for an unforgettable week of educational offerings, networking, insights from the Small Business Administration and matchmaking sessions to capitalize on present and future opportunities in federal contracting. There was a lot of buzz surrounding this year’s event given the most recent Executive Orders and overall groundwork being laid in our current political landscape. With over 2,500 attendees, both from government and industry, it was indeed an exciting week.

Future of Small Business in GovCon

Many of the keynote sessions addressed concerns about the future of the 8(a) program and other notable certifications like WOSB, HUBZone and SDVOSB. All of the major organizations supporting these certifications and their constituents were represented providing a unified front of support across the board.

Overall, there was positive feedback from the SBA concerning the continuation of the 8(a) program. They highlighted how it is mandated by Congress and designed in support of small disadvantaged businesses, giving certain protection from any Executive Order elimination. However, there are specific implications or indirect impacts that could apply a stricter application process or even reduced support but that is still to be seen. This message was a welcomed relief to those already participating in the program and to those still looking to apply and participate.

Breakout Sessions

The breakout sessions were diverse and impactful, covering a wide array of topics such as access to capital, legal approaches to different practices within procurement and “how to do business with” sessions with multiple government agencies.

The SBA had several panels discussing the utilization of tools to better navigate the federal marketplace and identify opportunities. Parabilis was proud to participate in a panel discussion on accessing capital and was met with a full house of eager contractors looking to learn more and engage in the financial planning process that is so integral to sustainable success in federal contracting.

The week was topped off by many after-hours events where participants could network and grow their spheres of influence. NOLA is known for its tremendous food, music, architecture and hospitality all around. Not to mention being the home of the Super Bowl this year that preceded the conference festivities. All in all, it was a fantastic week, and we were grateful for the chance to be a part of it all again this year.

Cheers to the National 8(a) Association team for putting together a week for the record books.
